What is Stucco?

Traditional stucco combines cement with water and inert materials, such as sand and lime, this is then formed into a plaster to cover surfaces and moldings by trowel. Wooden walls are covered in tar paper and galvanized wire/mesh and then the mixture is applied in coats. Stucco has been around for a long time, the concept of using cement in architecture dates back to ancient times. Stucco as a building material is weather resistant, attractive, and a very strong wall covering.

How long does stucco last?

The lifespan of stucco is hard to describe in years. Homes built in the 1900s still have no problems and have had very little maintenance. With proper installation and application the stucco exterior usually outlasts the house.

Does stucco offer any fire resistance?

Cement in nature does not burn. In a fire, the furniture inside will combust far before the walls start to be affected. With a thick coating of cement protecting the vulnerable and structural parts of a house, its ability to withstand any disaster is far superior than anything else.

How is stucco installed?

The application of a stucco exterior comes in three stages:

  1. Paper and Wire
  2. Base Cement Coat
  3. Finishing Cement Coat

Why should you repair stucco after a new window installation?

When new windows are installed on a stucco home a few things must be taken into consideration. Firstly, many installers use a process called window inserts. They will tell you they can put the window in flush without damage to your stucco, this is not 100 percent true. They may be able to insert the window without damaging the cement but the install process itself cuts the building envelope seal. Since stucco is porous, water can be absorbed by the cement and enter through this now cut paper. Windows on a stucco home must be sealed properly with blue-skin tar membrane and membrane primer. Secondly, insert windows cannot be properly flashed if the stucco around the window is not repaired. This can also lead to leaks. It is best that window installers work in conjunction with stucco professionals to insure the job is done right.

I got a new roof/shingle installation, do I need to replace the stucco along my roofline?

It is important to consult a stucco professional when a new roof has been installed on a stucco home. Roof flashings and diverter flashings at roof terminations must be tied into your existing stucco. This requires a stucco roofline plasterstop install and repair.

The roof flashing installed by the roofers must be placed underneath the tar paper behind your stucco in order to maintain the integrity of the building envelope. This requires the demolition and stucco repair of about 6-8 inches along your roofline.

Today’s construction standards also call for a plasterstop to be installed along roof flashings, this raises the stucco 2-3 inches away from the roof. This process discourages wicking of moisture and strengthens the termination of the stucco. This also eliminates cracking and crumbling of the stucco along the roofline, which is very common in older stucco homes.

It’s is best that a home owner contacts a stucco professional after a roof has been replaced. This ensures that your building envelope is working properly, and your exterior investment is done correctly.

Woodpeckers have damaged my stucco, can you help?

Exterior insulated finishing system otherwise known as E.I.F.S is a popular cladding system that used to mainly be used in commercial applications. A cladding with a higher r-value is very desirable when it comes to larger buildings and the lightweight foam is excellent for high rise applications where cement stucco is impractical.

In recent years E.I.F.S. use in residential builds has been on the rise. Again, the r-value is desirable to the homeowner and the lightweight application is a plus for the contractor, but there is something else to consider.

Our friend the woodpecker. While beautiful to watch, the woodpecker can be a E.I.F.S. owners worst nightmare. Woodpeckers love foam stucco, they use the hollow sound the foam stucco provides when they are ‘drumming’ which is their way of making themselves known to other birds.

This continuous drumming can easily penetrate the very thin layer of acrylic and basecoat that is applied to the foam sheets underneath. The bird then picks away at the foam and the home owner is left with a sizeable hole and a phone call to their local stucco professional.

In some cases foam architectural details or cornices can become a nesting ground for all sorts of birds. As depicted in one of our case studies.

Next Generation Stucco Inc. has quite a bit of experience with these types of repairs and can recommend the best course of action to solve the problem.

We fix small holes to large nested cornices, and have very effective techniques to stop further damage to affected areas.
